HOWARD JONES: 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

UK/2005/175’/video/5.1

“In spring 2003, Howard came to me and asked me if I would be interested in directing and filming a one-off three-hour concert celebrating the twenty years since the release of his first single (‘New Song’), which was to be held at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in September" says Sadia.

"We wanted to get the audience’s perspective as well as the more traditional point of view, and the brief was to incorporate these aspects so that the final edit provided not only a record of the concert, but also a sense of what it was like to actually be there on the night.

“To this end I decided to use thirteen cameras: there were three static cameras, one hand-held and a mini-Steadicam on the stage, a jib camera which I decided to position in the wings, and a set of static lipstick cameras. I also recruited half a dozen enthusiasts who were given camcorders, a set of tapes, and the run of the theatre, and sent out to film whatever they thought was important.

“Since the shooting was unrehearsed, there’s an energy and a spontaneity to it, since we were all reacting very much in ‘real time’ to what was taking place on the stage and in the audience.

“As you can imagine, I wound up with a lot of footage, which I edited down over a period of a few months. We also recorded a lot of behind-the-scenes footage, as well as additional interviews and documentary-style footage for what turned out to be about another 90 minutes worth of extras that were included on the DVD.”
